Take care of your ski equipment before summer

The season is drawing to a close. Perhaps you've already had your last run for the year. Then it's high time to take care of your equipment for the summer.

If you do the work now, your gear will last longer. In addition, you'll save money for your next trip instead of having to buy new equipment.

SKIING

  • Start by thoroughly cleaning your skis. Rinse off dirt, salt, and dust. Then, clean the base with a base cleaner to remove dirt and old wax. Let them dry completely.
  • Inspect the edges and base, and sharpen the skis. Have your skis sharpened so you're ready for next winter, otherwise, inspect and remove rust. Also check the base and repair and fill in any scratches and damage.
  • Apply a layer of wax to remain on the skis over the summer. This protects the base and keeps the skis in better condition for next winter. TIP! Choose a richer wax for positive temperatures.
  • Then, store the skis in a dry and cool place. Avoid direct sunlight.

SKI BOOTS

Ski boots are both expensive and painful, so it's important that they feel right. Therefore, it pays to take care of your broken-in favourites so they last longer!

  • Wipe down the shell and check that there's no damage to the plastic.
  • Then remove the liners and let them air dry completely. Also remove the insoles.
  • Once everything is dry, put the insoles and liners back in and buckle the boots so they retain their shape.
  • Store the boots at room temperature during the summer, avoiding sunlight as plastic ages from UV light.

SKI CLOTHES

  • Wash your ski clothes according to the instructions. This applies to outerwear, base layers, mid-layers, and ski socks.
  • Your shell clothing also needs cleaning. Dirt and sweat impair its function. Therefore, it's a good idea to wash them and then re-waterproof them.
  • If you have down garments, you can take the opportunity to freshen them up. It's easier than many people think!
  • Don't forget your ski gloves. If you have leather gloves, it's a good idea to moisturize them to keep the material soft. Available for purchase here if you didn't get it when you bought them.

    Climbing skins

It's easy to forget to take care of your climbing skins. But then you risk them not working next season.

    • Make sure they are dry before storing them.
    • Check the glue; if necessary, reapply new glue.
    • Place them glue-to-glue or use the protective film if you still have it. Store them in a cool, dry place, preferably out of the bag.

    Avalanche equipment

It's important not to forget your avalanche equipment. Taking care of your transceiver can be the difference between life and death.

    • Remove the batteries from your transceiver to avoid corrosion. Set a reminder so you don't forget new batteries for winter.
    • It's also wise to service and update your transceiver regularly.
