Choosing base layers

A good base layer is the foundation for a successful day on the slopes or simply for a day outdoors. In this guide, we will explain how different materials work so you can choose the right type of base layer and material for your activity.

Base layers are designed to be the layer closest to the skin in the layering principle. Their purpose is to wick moisture away from the body and keep you dry.

Synthetic base layer

Synthetic base layers usually consist of polyester. This material dries relatively quickly. It has faster drying properties than most other materials. This makes synthetics good in slightly wetter conditions. Just like a base layer, polyester has good moisture-wicking properties that help you stay dry and thus also warm. Polyester is a very durable material with good stretchability, which is a great advantage for base layers as they should fit tightly against the body.

A synthetic base layer is suitable for activities with high intensity. The higher the intensity, the more synthetic material you should have. A good example of when you should wear a synthetic base layer is cross-country skiing.

+ Good stretchability.
– May be perceived to smell bad faster than natural materials like wool. (There are models with odor-inhibiting properties, for example, these contain materials like Microban and Polygiene).

Wool base layer

Wool base layers usually consist of merino wool and are suitable for colder weather conditions. Merino wool, however, has both warming and cooling properties and is excellent for wearing closest to the skin to wick away moisture. The material's soft fibers make it comfortable to wear, while also keeping you cool in warm conditions. This is often referred to as the material having good breathability.

A wool base layer is good for activities where the intensity is both high and low. For example, in alpine skiing, where you have high intensity downhill followed by low intensity on the lift. Then you can utilize the warming and insulating effect during low intensity and the moisture-wicking effect during high intensity.

Different models

Today there's a whole jungle of different base layers in various materials and models. Once you know which material suits you, it's time to look at which model to choose.

A base layer with a hood is suitable for those who want a little extra protection under their helmet. A hood can, for some, replace a hat or headband. The advantage of a hood is that the neck is also protected.

A base layer with a half-zip is suitable for those who want to quickly let in some fresh air at the neck to regulate warmth using the zipper. This model is often referred to as "Half Zip."

A base layer with a high neck is suitable for those who want a little extra protection around the neck. The advantage of a high neck compared to one with a half-zip is that you avoid a zipper that might chafe or stick out.

A base layer with a normal neckline is great for those who want an all-purpose base layer. Here, you don't have to worry about anything chafing or being tight around the neck. If you want extra warmth at the neck one day, you can supplement it with a neck warmer or similar. This is therefore a good model option if the base layer will be used as an all-round base layer.
