The purpose of Layer 2
The purpose of layer 2 is to retain body heat while releasing moisture. It should keep you warm without making you sweaty or overheated. When you are moving a lot, the garment needs to breathe and dry quickly. In colder weather, or during more relaxed activities, it is more important that it insulates properly.
That's why mid-layers come in different thicknesses and materials, from light fleece sweaters to warmer insulated jackets. This way, you can always adjust the warmth to suit your activity and the weather.
In short: a layer 2 is key to maintaining a consistent and comfortable temperature, whether you're sweating on an uphill climb or standing still in the lift line.

Material – fleece, wool, and synthetic insulation
The choice of material affects how warm and breathable your mid-layer will be. The most common materials are fleece, wool, and synthetic insulation. All have different properties depending on the activity and temperature.
Fleece is the most common mid-layer for skiing. It is lightweight, soft, and dries quickly. Fleece breathes well and wicks away moisture, making it perfect for active days when you move a lot. It comes in various thicknesses, from thin pullovers to heavier models for cold days.
Wool provides warmth even when it gets damp and is suitable for those who prefer natural materials. It breathes well but does not dry as quickly as fleece. Wool garments work excellently for more relaxed skiing or as an extra insulating layer under a shell jacket.
Synthetic insulation is used in thin insulation jackets that also function as a mid-layer. They are filled with synthetic fibers that resemble down but tolerate moisture much better. This is a good option when you want more warmth than fleece, but still low weight and good mobility.
In short: choose fleece for active skiing, wool for natural warmth, and synthetic insulation when you want an extra warm mid-layer that also works as a light jacket.
