Things to consider when buying ski socks
Your feet are the foundation of your skiing, making ski boots incredibly important. To provide the ski boots with the right conditions, good ski socks are a given. A poorly fitting pair of ski socks can ruin any day of skiing.
The socks should go over the shaft of the ski boot or snowboard boot to prevent any edges from rubbing against your leg.
Choose the right size. The better ski socks have a smaller range per size to ensure that the socks fit well, so that there isn't excess material bunching up, for example, at the heel and causing friction.
Different types of ski socks
Good ski socks are also knitted with a right and a left sock, all to achieve the best fit for your feet. Thinking that thick socks mean warm socks is completely wrong in this case. A pair of thick socks increases the risk of bunching in the ski boot, and the fit will be anything but good.
Opt for thinner/medium-thick ski socks, with a blend of wool and synthetic. The more wool, the warmer, but durability might be slightly lower. Never wear double socks in your ski boots; this will not increase warmth. It will likely cause bunching with rubbing and pressure, which ultimately makes you feel colder.
Ski sock with built-in heating element
Do you know that you get really cold? Then it might be worth investing in a sock with a built-in heating element from Therm-Ic. These are battery-powered and keep your feet warm all day long!
Many ski socks are reinforced at the shin to help reduce pressure. Some people have problems with rubbing and pressure on the shin. If the reinforcement from the ski sock doesn't help, it might be worth investing in a pair of shin protectors from Sidas. These are silicone plates that are placed between the shin and the sock. You can then easily clean them with a little soap and water and reuse them again and again.
Remember that with a really good pair of ski socks, you ensure your toes stay warm while the ski boots fit optimally on your foot.
