Sigg has a history that began in 1908. After years of travel, the metalworking specialist, Ferdinand Sigg, returned to Switzerland. Together with his friend Xaver Küng, he started a factory for aluminium goods in Biel. They had a love for metal and a belief that aluminium was the material of the future.
Their success proves them right: Just one year after production started, the company had 30 employees. Shortly before the company moved to Frauenfeld in 1917, Xaver Küng left the company. It then changed its name to SIGG AG Aluminiumwarenfabrik.
The first Sigg bottle
From the very beginning, they sold a wide range of pots, pans, teacups, cutlery and household products including water bottles. Over time, the company has repeatedly conquered new markets with new ideas. In 1958, the product range included over 10,000 products! The SIGG bottle was added to the range of household products by chance. When making pots and pans, a lot of aluminium was left over as waste. During the resource-poor war years, a new meaningful use for valuable raw material was sought and found: They developed a bottle!
The true story behind the SIGG bottle is not what one might think: It is not the successor to the 1920s water bottle, but to the bed bottle, model 26 1661. This was on the market as far back as the 1960s. Its profile was later gradually taken from the classic Traveller bottle, which soon became widely used. The shape of the bed bottles is reflected in the classic SIGG drinking bottle. It is still considered a symbol of a reusable aluminium bottle. In 1990, the course was set for the future of the bottle: The company developed a new shape that is still typical of today's 0.5 and 0.75 litre bottles.
Design becomes an important aspect of all SIGG products. The product range is reduced. In the following years, SIGG's in-house designers began to design classic items such as the Traveller's screw cap, iconic kitchen utensils and well-known household appliances.
New products
In the early 90s, new products were developed, such as the 0.75 L aluminium bottle with the innovative three-stage sports cap. At the same time, SIGG launched multi-coloured children's bottles and traveller bottles. This found a way to meet the trend demand in the coming years!
"Original Swiss Bottle" is also an example of world-renowned design and manufacturing performance. In 1993, it was awarded to enter the prestigious Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City.
In the same year, they produced their first design collection. This transformed an already functional product into a sought-after fashion accessory and collector's item.
Another historical landmark: 1996. This is the year SIGG Switzerland AG began sponsoring trend sports events. Special SIGG bottles with the event logo were created for hip events such as the Air & Style Contest, Quiksilver Roxy Jam and the Mountainbike Worldcup. Only a few hundred items for each event, what is desirable and rare stimulates a passion for collecting them.
After an investor group took over the company in 1999, the company adapted its focus and product range to prepare for the future. As the world market leader in aluminium bottles, SIGG wanted to further expand its position. With this goal in mind, they decided to focus production and business on bottles.
This started the era of SIGG's Limited Editions. "Swiss Cross" a limited edition of the SIGG bottle - the most exclusive bottle of 2003. Its profile: finest material with a 0.6 litre capacity. Its subtle cover: red leather cover with Swiss Cross embroidered in white and an engraved logo. Of course, it has the same functionality as all other SIGG bottles, despite its unusual appearance.
SIGG moved to a new building in 2004. The new office and warehouse building reflects SIGG's pioneering spirit and dynamism: the building facade is made of aluminium and the surroundings are in mineral bauxite stone - the raw material for pure aluminium.
100th anniversary
In 2008, SIGG celebrated its 100th anniversary with market presence in over 40 countries! They were then the market leader in the aluminium bottle segment. In the same year, SIGG expanded its production facilities and introduced a new Kids Bottle Top.
In February 2016, SIGG was acquired by the stainless steel vacuum flask manufacturer HAERS, China. With its access to the rapidly growing Chinese market and its expertise in stainless steel, polypropylene and Tritan products, the new parent company is the perfect partner.Aluminium bottles continue to be manufactured at SIGG's headquarters in Frauenfeld, Switzerland.
